IMPORTANT INDUSTRY UPDATE!

Ontario is proposing to allow Horizontal Guard Design!

We get tons of requests for horizontal guard designs and customers are often quite disapointed to find that these systems don't currently meet Ontario Building Code (OBC). Great news though, Ontario is proposing to harmonize the Ontario Building Code (OBC) with the National Building Code 2015 (NBC) for guard rails. Public review for this change ends December 4, 2021!

This change, which has already been accepted in other provinces, will allow for horizontal elements like cable rail in guard design.

To review the proposed changes open the proposed building code changes file here:

Scroll to page 114 to find Part 3, code sentence 3.3.1.17.(5) and 3.4.6.6.(8) pertaining to guards. Scroll to page 319 to find part 9, code sentence 9.8.8.6.(1)pertaining to guards.

Whether you reside in another province or work, live, or visit Ontario, your voice is important! Send a message to the government to support reduced regulation and promote inter-provincial trade.

It only takes 30 seconds to voice your support! Open the following link:

Add your name and email. Reference code numbers: 3.3.1.17.(5), 3.4.6.6.(8), and 9.8.8.6.(1). Lastly add the comment, "I support harmonization".

Spread the Word! Anyone can support this change! Forward this email to your colleagues, industry contacts, friends, and family.

Cheers,

The Stairhaus Team

Steel Mono-Stringer Installation

Here is a rad time lapse of the boys hoisting up a mega heavy steel mono-stringer. We installed solid 1-3/4” hickory treads and will be adding stand-off glass with matching black hardware.

How it's done!

This is how you make all the stair parts disappear! Planning is critical with a stringerless/infinity open rise stair like this. This is 1 of 3 sets in this amazing Lake Joseph cottage. The custom fabricated steel tread brackets are mounted to the LVL backed walls. These walls will then get boarded with 1/2" ply followed by 5/8" mdf which will be painted. We will be installing 3" white oak box treads for a seamless/stringerless infinity look.

Job location: Lake Joseph, ON.

Galleries Updated!

It has been a month or two since I last updated our galleries.  Take a look, added some really amazing projects we were a part of.  May 1st - time sure is flying, enjoy your week everyone!

Walnut Table Top - Polyester Sealant

How satisfying is this?

Here is a quick video of my bro Mike from North Shore Finishes applying the 2nd coat after giving the 1st coat a sand. We went with a spay-on polyester/matte sealant so we could have a low sheen finish. The finished result absolutely rules

Really Cool Stairs #4 - Cable Railing Edition

Within the next 2 years, the clause in the Ontario building code that makes horizontal railing systems like the cable railing illegal, will be erased from the code book.  This means that not only horizontal cable systems are ok, you can now install all the fancy scrolls, laser cut steel panels and contemporary wood patterns!
